GUIDE TO LAYERING:
Layering is a system of dressing for the outdoors. It allows you to be comfortable in a variety of conditions by adding or removing layers of clothing. No single garment could be expected to be right for all conditions. The system is as simple as 1 - 2 - 3..

1. First start with a "wicking" layer, to move moisture away from the body to prevent chilling. This layer goes directly against the skin. Fabrics such as FLEECE, polypropylene, Acclimate, Thermax are examples.

2. Next is the insulating layer to hold body heat and keep moisture moving away from the body. FLEECE, Wool, or pile are examples of such fabrics.

3. Top it all off with a weatherproof layer to protect you from wind and rain. Ideally it should "breath," allowing moisture from inside to escape while keeping rain from getting in. Examples of these fabrics are Gore-Tex, Microshed, and Triple-Point Ceramic.

Remember, layering is your ultimate weather weapon. It provides comfort in a variety of conditions with a minimum of clothing.

A FOUR LETTER WORD ABOUT COTTON:
DON'T!

Cotton is natural, comfortable, and will never go out of style. It is also the worst thing you can wear for backpacking. It absorbs a ton of water and dries very slowly. Wet cotton will chill you even on a hot day. It is not safe as active outdoor apparel. That is why we strongly favor FLEECE.

WHY WE FAVOR FLEECE

Fleece does not retain water and is twice as warm as wool! Fleece will protect to 20 degrees below zero Fahrenheit! That's -20* F or -29* C.

And if you love the outdoors, you'll be happy to know that FLEECE is made from 85% recycled materials (soda pop bottles, plastic bags etc).
